Alabama Division Convention
Proudly hosted by Captain Thomas H. Hobbs Camp #768
Madelyn's in the Grove, Location of Commander's Reception
Alabama Division Members, The Hobbs Camp has graciously agreed to host the 2006 Alabama Division Convention in Athens and I have great confidence in their abilities to put on an excellent event. This year is an extremely important year for your camp to participate in the convention as we will be electing the officers that will govern the Sons of Confederate Veterans in Alabama for the next two years. The SCV has gone through many changes in the last few years and now is the time to determine a uniform path on how we will address the challenges in protecting the legacy of our Confederate ancestors. It is important that we choose leaders who will continue to challenge us to strive harder and who remain dedicated to the cause. Athens is a beautiful city that is protecting and preserving its rich history. On Athens State University, where we will be holding the convention, you can view Founders Hall which local legend says was saved from burning by Yankee troops raiding Athens when the College Madam produced a letter said to have been written by President Lincoln. Athens-Limestone County is blessed with an abundance of historic homes and sites, many dating back to the mid- and late 1800's. The focal point of these is the Donnell House. The homestead served as a bouvac for Yankee troops during the raid and ransacking of Athens. Please take the time to visit the Confederate Monument and graves in the Confederate Circle (Athens City Cemetery) as well as the Confederate Monument on the City square near the Limestone County Courthouse. Plan on staying for the whole weekend and enjoy history in the heart of cotton country. I am looking forward to seeing a good crowd at this convention and to sharing some accomplishments as your commander. God Bless the South,
