Alabama Division Members,

The Hobbs Camp has graciously agreed to host the 2006 Alabama Division Convention in Athens and I have great confidence in their abilities to put on an excellent event.  This year is an extremely important year for your camp to participate in the convention as we will be electing the officers that will govern the Sons of Confederate Veterans in Alabama for the next two years.  The SCV has gone through many changes in the last few years and now is the time to determine a uniform path on how we will address the challenges in protecting the legacy of our Confederate ancestors.  It is important that we choose leaders who will continue to challenge us to strive harder and who remain dedicated to the cause.

Athens is a beautiful city that is protecting and preserving its rich history.  On Athens State University, where we will be holding the convention, you can view Founders Hall which local legend says was saved from burning by Yankee troops raiding Athens when the College Madam produced a letter said to have been written by President Lincoln. Athens-Limestone County is blessed with an abundance of historic homes and sites, many dating back to the mid- and late 1800's.  The focal point of these is the Donnell House.  The homestead served as a bouvac for Yankee troops during the raid and ransacking of Athens.  Please take the time to visit the Confederate Monument and graves in the Confederate Circle (Athens City Cemetery) as well as the Confederate Monument on the City square near the Limestone County Courthouse.

Plan on staying for the whole weekend and enjoy history in the heart of cotton country.

I am looking forward to seeing a good crowd at this convention and to sharing some accomplishments as your commander.

God Bless the South,
Leonard Wilson

More about

ATHENS and LIMESTONE COUNTY

Limestone County gets its name from the creek which flows through it, whose bed is of hard limestone.  The Tennessee River runs along the southern end of the county, and its northernmost border stretches to the Tennessee line.  Limestone County was created by an act of the Alabama Territorial General Assembly on February 6, 1818.  Athens was chosen as the county seat in 1819, and remains the Limestone County seat today.

Athens State University is Alabama's oldest institute of higher learning.  The main building on the campus, Founders Hall, was built in 1842.  Local legend says the building was saved from burning by Union troops during the War of Southern Independence when the College Madam produced a letter from President Abraham Lincoln. Founders Hall houses the Altar of the New Testament.  Athens State is listed on the National Register of Historic Places.

Also in Athens is the Alabama Veterans Museum & Archives, located in the old L&N Freight Depot in Athens.  The museum houses memorabilia from all the wars in United States history and features a library and archives open to the public.  Visitors can spend hours reading the stories of veterans and looking through the artifacts such as uniforms, weapons and photographs at the museum that celebrated its grand opening on November 10, 2002.

Older than the state of Alabama, Mooresville is the oldest incorporated town in
Limestone County and the state. Prominent structures include the 1820s Stage Coach Inn and Tavern, 1825 former lodging of a young Andrew Johnson, the 1839 community brick church, and the 1840 town post office.  Mooresville steps back in time every other year when local residents, dressed in period costumes, bring early America to life during the Walking Tour of Mooresville.
